From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

I would like to thank everyone at Jennings for their incredible professionalism, support and attention to detail throughout my experience with the company. At such a difficult time it is so important to have people guiding you that you can trust. I am so pleased we again chose to use this company. The whole process was perfect and went so smoothly. Excellent all round.
The arrangements went very smoothly, and myself and the family are appreciative of the arrangements made by Jennings, Horseley Fields, in particular the attention given by Michelle.
We were treated with compassion, sympathy and respect. We were led through the process by Lisa O Shea who was professional, patient and a credit to this company.
The day of the funeral the drivers were immaculately dressed and respectful. A special thanks to Junior, the funeral director, who yet again did everything in his power to make sure things were professional and respectful.
At our most vulnerable we felt comfortable & confident that our loved one would be treated with respect and those remaining would be looked after too.
Many thanks to you all.
